If the spa is a small 2-person type, I add one half
bottle of SPA PH Balance. If the spa is larger, add an entire bottle of SPA PH
Balance. Wait approximately 1 minute for the PH Balance to circulate in the spa
water.
Now, using the Bromine Test Strips, check the PH and
Alkalinity level of the water. It
should read (somewhere near) PH Neutral (possibly a bit alkaline), and an
alkalinity level of at least 160 (ppm), up to a high of around 200.

Then what I do is shock the spa water using the non-chlorine
shock according to the label directions, or by using household bleach. Using
regular bleach, what I usually recommend with a 2 person tub, is to add
one-half cup. 3 person, two-thirds cup. 4-7 person spa, add one cup. Allow at
least 1 minute for the added chemicals to circulate in the spa water.
|
| Next, unscrew the bottom of the bromine dispenser, and
fill it with bromine tablets. Now, if you're using a dispenser like the one
depicted, the easiest way to initially adjust the setting is to leave one slot
open for each seat in the tub. This is simply a starting point. Different
brands of bromine tablets leach into the water faster than others, and your
particular setting may need to be adjusted for more or less. |
 |
In approximately 2 days, test the bromine
level of the water. It should indicate 3-5 (ppm) on the color chart; (an
"ok" reading). If it reads too low or too high, open or close the
bromine dispenser by one or two slots, and check it again in 24
hours.
If your spa is using a working Ozone Generator, only a
residual sanitizer level is normally required. In mine I maintain about 1
ppm. Some mineral based sanitizers may require as little as .5 ppm of bromine
or chlorine.
That's basically all that is required for setting up your
initial water quality maintenance program. Check your water using the bromine
test strips at least on a weekly basis, and adjust the level of bromine as
required.
Now, for periodic maintenance, use a Water Clarifier to
clear up the water if it becomes cloudy. Follow the instructions on the
bottle.
Next, if you notice foam accumulating on the surface of the
water, use a De-Foaming agent in accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions. Use the de-foamer sparingly! This stuff is extremely
effective, and usually requires only a short squirt out of the bottle to do its
job.
