Sta-Rite® Pump Seal Replacement
Previous Page Pump Index

Note that the purpose of this section is to show you how to remove & install a spa pump seal for a Watkins Hot Springs® "Classic" spa.    While every effort is made to be sure that virtually all areas of complexity are covered, you may find it more difficult or sometimes easier to accomplish this task.  Use common sense.  If the pump that you have on your pool or spa is a lot different from what is depicted here, then do not use these instructions. This is page 4 of this procedure.

Safety Warnings!
Remove Power from the spa/hot tub BEFORE performing this procedure.  Failure to comply with this requirement, can lead to electrical shock and/or electrocution!
Disclaimer

The instructions here are intended for general reference only.  Many pumps are different from the one depicted here, and may require more or less mechanical effort or knowledge in order to achieve the desired results.

realign the diffuser... ensure that the impeller rotates freely
Now realign the diffuser according to your original mark, and tighten the screws. and ensure that the impeller does not touch or interfere with the diffuser, by rotating it.

Lubricate the o-ring sealing area with Waterlube..
Here I use Waterlube to guarantee a good seal when the pump assembly is put back together.. Inspect the large o-ring for cracks or damage.  If it's flattened, it may need to be replaced sometime in the future.

Lubricate the o-ring with Waterlube... pump reassembly.
And of course, lubricate the main o-ring before re-assembly.  Sometimes, getting the pump to this point may be a little easier said than done.  Patience and persistence is mandantory here.  Be sure the clamp is 'around' the outside rim on the back side of the pump, (where you can't see it) not slipping between the pump halves. Don't forget to put the ground wire on first!

Tighten the retaining band. Gap betwen band ends should be less than 3/4 of an inch.
Tighten the retaining band with a deep well wrench, or if your pump has a knob, use your hand to tighten it. The gap between the ends of the retaining band will normally be less than 3/4" when properly sealed.  If the pump leaks, it may help to try tightening it a little more.  If you get to 1/2" and it still leaks, then you need to replace the main o-ring.

inspect and lubricate the drain plug.. then re-install it, and we're finished...
While I'm at it, I also like to remove the pump drain screw, inspect it and the small o-ring for cracks or damage, lubricate and re-install it.  With all this finished now, I replace the pump anchor bolts into the spa equipment base, refill the spa, check for leaks, power it up, keep my fingers crossed, then.... relax with a cup of coffee.
